The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
